Asthma is a disease causing inflammation or narrowing of the airways with increased mucous production. Symptoms include coughing, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, or wheezing. Common triggers include allergies, exercise, smoke, illness, cold/hot weather, and humidity.
Young children may be too young for a formal "asthma" diagnosis, but may still require steroid inhalers to help with airway inflammation, especially during viral illnesses. Children with other allergic diseases may also be at risk to develop asthma in the future and should have periodic monitoring to make sure they can breathe safely.
