How to Use a Spacer with an Inhaler

All patients with a Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) should always use a spacer to increase effectiveness of the medication. Check out this easy guide on how to use!

Instructions

  • Assemble the Inhaler and Spacer: Attach the inhaler to the spacer. Shake the inhaler well (5-10 seconds).
  • Exhale and Position the Spacer: Exhale fully, then place the mouthpiece of the spacer in your mouth, ensuring a good seal.
  • Release and Inhale: Press the inhaler to release a puff of medication into the spacer. Breathe in slowly for 3-5 seconds.
  • Hold Your Breath: Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale gently.
  • Repeat if Needed: Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute before repeating for additional puffs. Shake the inhaler again if needed.
  • Clean the Spacer: Clean the spacer regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
